Square feet of new meeting spaces
The scope for the 1,435,000-square-foot convention center includes the expansion and renovation of the center to provide upgraded show needs and increase the potential for the city to market the center on an international basis. The center is already home to world-renowned events such as Art Basel and the Boat Show.
The project includes a new 60,000-square-foot ballroom and 127,000 square feet of new meeting spaces. The project will transform over six acres of parking lot into space for a public park and perform landscaping and infrastructure improvements, including a tropical garden, game lawn, shaded areas, veterans plaza, pavilion, and water feature. The project will accommodate 500,000 square feet of exhibit hall space with increased power and improved IT connectivity capacities, increased ballroom and meeting areas, and renovated back-of-house spaces.
The renovation concepts are inspired by sleek modern designs incorporating natural elements of the ocean, beach, and underwater life. Waves, manta rays, and coral reefs were studied as part of the design process. The exterior building envelope is designed with linear forms that create a curvilinear undulation inspired by ocean waves. The facade has hurricane resistant connections that can hold up against large storms. It is also built for the future utilizing steel construction with composite metal decks for raised floors in the case of rising sea levels. The smooth interior design finishes emulate receding water, sea foam, and patterns relating to varying types of local coral reef.
In addition to the goal of making Miami Beach Convention Center the most technologically-advanced center in the U.S., the renovation will also provide captivating outdoor event spaces and rooftop pavilion opportunities for delegates. This project involves complicated renovations and replacements of virtually all the building’s electrical and mechanical operating systems. The project has a LEED Silver goal. The building systems will be extensively upgraded to earn the sustainability certification. State-of-the-art low voltage electronic systems are part of the power saving tools that will be employed.
